The best websites work on any device — is yours one of them?

Have you ever visited a website on your smartphone that doesn’t display properly and you can’t find the information you need? It’s SO frustrating! Especially if you’re on the go and just want to make a quick reservation or check to see if your favourite bakery has opened yet. Increasingly more and more of us are using our smartphones to check the web.

‘In 2018, 52.2% of all worldwide online traffic was generated through mobile phones, up from 50.3% in the previous year’ (Statista, 2018).

In some countries, this is even higher and is only set to grow.

‘Not only that, but ’69% of smartphone users say that they are more likely to buy from companies with mobile sites that easily address their questions or concerns’ (BrightEdge, 2017).

The picture couldn’t be clearer. Customers expect they can visit your website and quickly and easily find exactly what they want, regardless of what device they’re using. This means that if your website isn’t optimised for mobile, not only will you have frustrated customers, but you’re likely to miss out on valuable business too. So take action and ask yourself the following questions to make sure you’re providing the best website experience you can for all your customers all of the time.

  1. What devices are your visitors using to visit your website?

Check your web analytics and find out how many of your site visitors are using a mobile device to access access your website. The result might surprise you!

  2. Does your website work on a range of screens?

Remember your customers aren’t all using the same setup as you. It’s important to check that your website displays and works properly on a range of screen sizes for different devices. One way to do this is to type your url into Google’s free Mobile-Friendly tool to find out if Google considers your website mobile friendly or not. If the tool says “not mobile friendly” then the page will be pushed down in the mobile search results in favour of similar pages from other sites that are mobile friendly. Another option is BrowserStack, a paid service which shows you screenshots of how your website looks on each device and browser.

  3. Is your website content smart phone friendly?

Check that important information to your customers can be quickly and easily found. Your customers shouldn’t have to dig around to find basic information like your opening hours, contact information and how to make an appointment.
